چکیده

Background: Obesity in children is now an increasing health risk worldwide in which the insulin-resistance can be present. Studies have linked a diet rich in n-3 fatty acids with a lower prevalence of insulin-resistance. Objective: To compare the levels of eicosapentaenoic acid among obese children with and without insulin-resistance. Materials and Methods: In 56 randomly school-age children with obesity, insulin-resistance was determined by the homeostasis model assessment for insulin-resistance index and the serum levels of eicosapentaenoic acid were determined by gas chromatography. Insulin-resistance was established when the index was >6.0, noninsulin-resistance when that index was <1.4 and as an intermediate group when the index was within the range of 1.4-5.9. The serum levels of eicosapentaenoic acid were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests, as needed. Results: No differences in age or sex were identified among the groups studied. The anthropometric parameters were significantly higher in the group of children with insulin-resistance than in the other two groups. The children with insulinresistance had significantly lower levels of eicosapentaenoic acid than the noninsulin-resistance group [12.4% area under the curve vs. 37.4%, p = 0.031], respectively. Conclusion: Obese primary school-aged children with insulin-resistance had lower plasma levels of eicosapentaenoic acid. (Nutr Hosp. 2015;31:1102-1108) DOI:10.3305/nh.2015.31.3.8047

Comparison of Insulin resistance in obese women with and without Acanthosis Nigricans

Background and aim: Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is characterized by hyperpigmented velvety plaques of body folds and neck. Insulin can have a role in the pathogenesis of this disease and hyperinsulinemia as a consequence of insulin resistance may stimulate the formation of the characteristic plaques of AN. In this study insulin resistance was compared in obese women with and without AN.</sp...

COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTS OF EIGHT WEEKS OF RESISTANCE TRAINING WITH AND WITHOUT SAFFRON EXTRACT, BARBERRY ON SERUM LEVEL 4 OF RETINOL BINDING PROTEIN, AND INSULIN RESISTANCE IN OBESE MICE WITH HIGH-FAT DIET

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of eight weeks of resistance training with and without the use of aqueous extracts of barberry and saffron on serum levels of RBP4, glucose, insulin and insulin resistance in obese mice. Methods: In this study, 80 mice with a mean weight of 41± 2 g were exposed to high fat diet for 10 weeks. Then, they were randomly assigned to 8 ...

The effect of exercise status on response of homocysteine and insulin resistance to aerobic exercise in postmenopausal obese women

Homocysteine and insulin resistance in postmenoupausal women rises due to decrease in estrogen, low mobility and weight gain which increase the cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of aerobic exercise training status on response of homocysteine and insulin resistance to aerobic exercise in active and nonactive obese postmenopausal women. Therefore, 21 obese ...

Background and Objective: Insulin resistance is one of the key components of metabolic syndrome and a major risk factor for diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases, especially among obese people. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of L-carnitine supplementation either with or without moderate aerobic training on insulin resistance and anthropometric indices in obese women.
